About

Welcome to Black Spasmodic.

My pen name/middle name is Tobenna, an Igbo name meaning “Praise the Father (God).” I’m a 24-year-old Nigerian-American. Black Spasmodic, named after the A Tribe Called Quest song of the same name, was created in early 2018 mainly as an outlet for me to chronicle my personal growth, my observations about the world around me, and the music that inspires me. I’ve written about race/ethnicity/identity, self-hatred and internalized prejudice, Black culture, music, and the ways in which all of these things intersect. As I continue to grow and become more comfortable with this platform, this pool of topics will expand as well.
